“A Mezuzah for Every House”
Dnepropetrovsk has now completed the first stage of the project “A Mezuzah for Every Jewish House,” which became possible through the initiative of the Jewish community and the financial aid from the Maecenas of Enrico Tsitsuashvili.
For two weeks the students of Dnepropetrovsk Yeshiva “Nakhlas Levi,” the volunteers and the colleagues in the Jewish community have been visiting homes and apartments of the elderly, limited-income families who have identified themselves as members of the Jewish community.
After explaining the importance and value of the commandment of mezuzah, they present a mezuzah to these families as a gift, and help them perform the solemn ceremony of placing a mezuzah at the entrance of the house.
The majority of those, who received this gift from the community, did not have the means to purchase their own mezuzah at a synagogue or Judaica store. Together with the mezuzah the volunteers also delivered gift packages: fruits, Kosher delicacies, chocolate, cheese, confections, canned foods, and juices.
The volunteers visited one hundred twenty families. Each man would lay tefillin. Each family was invited to participate in community events, including the celebration of Purim, and explained the commandments and traditions of the holiday.
